Fairfax sits at the top of the Ross Valley, wrapped in wooded hills, and a lot of its houses sit right in the trees. Oaks, bay laurels, madrones and a few redwoods hang over roofs all over town, so gutters fill fast and stay damp. Many homes started out as small cabins and weekend places in the early 1900s and have been added onto over the decades, which leaves roofs with odd angles, several small sections and gutters that were installed one piece at a time as the house grew. Lots are often steep and tight, with long stairways from the street. It all makes Fairfax one of the more interesting places in the county to work on gutters.

Most Fairfax homes get the biggest benefit from regular gutter cleaning or metal guards that keep debris out. On older houses with patchwork gutters, a targeted gutter repair can go a long way before a full replacement is needed. We'll look at the whole house and lay out the options in writing, free of charge.

Patchwork Roofs and Mixed-Up Gutters

A Fairfax house that grew from a cabin over 80 or 100 years often ends up with three or four different gutter styles on one roof. A half-round section from the original house, a K-style run on an addition, maybe a stretch of vinyl someone put up in a weekend. Each one has its own size, its own hangers and its own idea of where water should go. The weak spots are where they meet. Mismatched joints leak, and short runs that don't line up with a downspout send water off the end and onto the wall below. We look at the whole roof as one system, figure out where the water actually wants to go and either tie the pieces together properly or replace the worst sections so everything drains to a sensible place. Our gutter replacement page explains the full-swap option. Older homes in San Anselmo often have the same patchwork history.

Life in the Trees

Living under the trees is a big part of why people love Fairfax, and it's the main reason gutters here need more attention than average. Debris falls in every season. Bay laurel and madrone leaves drop through the year, oaks shed heavily in spring, and needles from the scattered redwoods and pines sift in all the time. Shade keeps it all damp, so moss and small plants take root in gutters that go unchecked. For most homes, metal mesh guards plus one or two cleanings each year is the practical answer. Metal is the better pick here for a second reason. Fairfax backs onto open space and wildland, and the county's fire-safety guidance favors metal gutters and guards over plastic or foam, and gutters kept clear of dry debris through fire season. We give homes in the wooded parts of Mill Valley the same advice.
