San Rafael has just about every kind of house Marin has to offer, and each one treats rain differently. Older homes around downtown and Gerstle Park tend to have tall, steep roofs that dump water fast into gutters that were often undersized to begin with. Up in Terra Linda, the mid-century Eichlers go the other way: low, wide roofs with long eaves where water moves slowly and spreads out along the whole edge. In between are plenty of ranch houses and split-levels from the decades after the war, many still wearing gutters that were cheap the day they went up. The same storm can overwhelm one house and barely trouble the one next door. Add the oaks in the hills above town and the wind that funnels up from the bay, and no two San Rafael gutter jobs look quite alike.

That's why we size every San Rafael job on site rather than reaching for a standard package. We measure each roof section, check the fascia and look at where the water lands, then recommend seamless gutter installation or a targeted gutter repair based on what the house actually needs. The estimate is free and in writing, and it lists every run, size and material so you can compare it line by line with anyone else's.

Low-Slope Roofs in Terra Linda and Lucas Valley

Eichler roofs are close to flat, which changes the math. Water doesn't race off the edge the way it does on a steep roof. It creeps toward the eave and then drops over a long stretch at once, often right where people walk between the carport and the front door. Gutters on these houses need a careful, consistent pitch because there's no roof slope helping push water along, and they usually need more downspouts than a pitched roof of the same size. Debris behaves differently too. Leaves sit on a low roof instead of sliding off, then wash into the gutter in clumps during the first big rain. On these homes, the downspout plan deserves as much thought as the gutter. Our downspouts and drainage page covers how we keep water away from slab foundations, atriums and courtyards. Many Eichler owners also want gutters that keep the clean, flat roofline these houses are known for, so we pay attention to profile and color as well as function. We see the same low-roof questions on mid-century homes in parts of Novato too.

Older Homes Near Downtown and Gerstle Park

The older neighborhoods closer to downtown are a different job. Victorians, craftsman bungalows and early 1900s homes often have steep roofs, multiple gables and detailed trim, and a plain aluminum K-style gutter can look out of place on them. For these houses, half-round gutters in aluminum or copper often fit the architecture better, and round downspouts finish the look. The practical side still comes first. Steep roofs push a lot of water quickly, so these gutters usually need to be larger than what's up there now, and the fascia boards on older homes deserve a close look before anything new gets hung. Many have had decades of overflow soaking into them. If the existing system is past saving, our gutter replacement page explains how we handle tear-off and board repair. Painted fascia and trim also get extra care here, since a careless tear-off can take paint and wood with it. Homeowners in the older parts of Larkspur often face the same choices.
