Gutters rarely fail all at once. A seam starts dripping, a hanger lets go, one corner pulls an inch away from the house, and every winter it gets a little worse. Eventually you're patching something every year and the water still isn't going where it should. That's usually the point where replacement makes more sense than repair. We see it most on homes that still have their original sectional gutters, in older neighborhoods of Novato and across the flatlands of Corte Madera, where the gutters went up with the house and have taken decades of storms since. By then the joints have opened up, the hangers have loosened and the pitch has drifted, so fixing one spot just moves the leak to the next one.

This page covers the signs that point to replacement instead of repair, why the board behind the gutter deserves just as much attention, how a replacement job runs from tear-off to cleanup, and what it does and doesn't do for an insurance claim. If you only have one bad section and the rest of the system is sound, our gutter repair page may save you money.

Repair or Replace? The Signs That Tip It

A single leaking joint or loose hanger is a repair. Replacement starts to make sense when the problems are spread out. Several seams dripping at once, more than one section sagging, rust holes in old steel gutters, or gutters that were never pitched right and hold standing water. Age matters too. Aluminum systems that are 20 to 30 years old have usually lost their seal at every joint, even if only a few leak today. Another clue is the fascia. If you can see dark stains or soft spots on the board behind the gutter, water has been getting past it for a while. Patching the gutter won't fix that. Replacing it gives you the chance to fix both. And if you're planning a new roof in the next year or two, it's often smart to time the gutters with it, since roofers may need to pull them anyway.

What's Behind Your Gutters: Fascia and Soffit

The fascia is the long board at the edge of the roof that your gutters hang on. The soffit is the panel underneath the roof overhang. When a gutter overflows or leaks at the back, water runs down the fascia and soaks into the end grain, and over a few winters the wood softens and starts to rot. New gutters can't hang securely on a rotten board. The hangers just pull out. That's why we inspect every foot of fascia as the old gutters come down. Soft sections get cut out and replaced with new lumber, primed and painted, before the new gutter goes up. Catching it now costs far less than waiting until rot spreads into the rafter tails behind it. Rafter tail repair means opening up the roof edge, which is a much bigger job.

How a Gutter Replacement Job Runs

First we take down the old gutters, downspouts and hangers and haul them away. Old fasteners come out and the holes get filled. Then we go over the fascia and soffit and show you anything that needs work before we fix it. With the boards sound, we measure each run, form new seamless gutters on site and hang them on hidden hangers with the right pitch toward each downspout. We reset or reroute downspouts where the old ones dumped water in the wrong place. Before we leave, we run water through every section to confirm it drains, clean up the debris on the ground and walk you through the finished job. Most replacements on a single-family home take one day, two if there's a lot of board work.

Gutter Replacement and Homeowners Insurance

Insurance generally covers sudden damage, not wear. If a falling branch or a big storm tears gutters off the house, that's often a covered claim. Gutters that slowly wore out from age usually aren't. When a claim does apply, documentation helps. We photograph the damage before we touch anything, note the length and type of gutter that was lost, and give you an itemized written estimate your adjuster can compare against. We don't decide coverage, and we don't promise an outcome. We just make sure your adjuster has clear, accurate information about what failed and what it takes to replace it properly. Keep copies of everything for your own records too.

A replacement is also the best moment to add drainage that actually works, and our downspouts and drainage page explains how we route water away from the house.

Common Questions

Count the problems. One leaking seam or one loose section is a repair. Leaks at several joints, sagging in more than one spot, rust, or gutters that hold standing water usually mean replacement is the better spend. If the fascia board behind the gutter is soft or stained, that points to replacement too, since the board needs to come off anyway. We'll give you an honest call at the estimate, including when repair is enough.

Yes. We check every foot of fascia as the old gutters come down, and we show you any soft or rotted sections before doing anything. With your OK, we cut out the bad wood, put in new boards, prime and paint them, then hang the new gutters on solid wood. If the rot runs deeper, into rafter tails or the roof deck, we'll tell you plainly what we found and what it will take.

Aluminum gutters commonly last around 20 years or more, and well-installed seamless systems in a mild climate like Marin's can go longer. Galvanized steel tends to rust out sooner. Copper can last 50 years or more. Sectional gutters often need replacing earlier than seamless ones because their joints fail first. Lifespan also depends on maintenance: gutters that stay clean and drain properly last much longer than ones left full of wet leaves.
